Beginning June 3, electric-motorcycle pioneers Moto-Electra and a team of James Madison University engineering students will make an attempt on the U.S. coast-to-coast record for electric vehicles. Their machine, built on a traditional Norton “featherbed” chassis with sleek replica John Player Norton streamlining, will be ridden by ex-racer Thad Wolff. The present record stands at around six days. Brian Richardson, manager of Moto-Electra, said, “We will travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean using only the batteries in the vehicle.” This is significant because it deliberately includes charging time. Batteries will not be exchanged for freshly charged ones kept ready in a chase vehicle. This will be a real life-cycle test. Richardson said the attempt is intended “to demonstrate the capability of current technology. We will run for two hours and charge for one hour.” This is a unique kind of test because it seeks to discover how batteries and other systems will perform under steady, real-world charge/discharge/charge conditions. This is not a drag race or a single 37-mile lap of the Isle of Man. “We anticipate the batteries will slowly come out of balance due to the demands that we will put them under,” explained Richardson. In commercial EVs and hybrids, battery life is carefully preserved by “protection circuits,” which prevent over-discharge and over-charge, and also limit current output and temperature. For such vehicles, the compromise between battery performance and battery life must favor the latter. The fast charging and deep discharge necessary for this electric Cannonball Run will take a toll on cell condition, but as Soichiro Honda often said, “More is learned from failure than from success.” This is information needed if electrics are to become more than commuter vehicles. “If we fail, the story is the effort—the first step,” said Richardson. “If we are successful, the story is the effort—the first step.” [gallery]

Bell Powersports Press Release: Bell Helmets is proud to announce that Isle of Man contender William Dunlop has joined the roster for 2013. William, nephew to Joey Dunlop, son to Robert Dunlop, and brother to Michael Dunlop, clearly has racing the TT in his blood. Motocross Media Press Release: Thunder Valley will host its ninth Lucas Oil Pro Motocross National. Round 2 is the earliest Thunder Valley has ever been on the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross schedule. Last year it was Round 3. The mile-high altitude at Thunder Valley is a unique element of this national. It will provide an additional challenge for mechanics in making a bike perform at its peak, while riders must physically adjust to the thinner air. Thunder Valley was the site of the first professional motocross event to ever be held under the lights, during the 2008 season. The track also hosted a night race during the 2009 season. In 2010, it was the host venue for the Motocross of Nations. Ivan Tedesco is the only rider to win at Thunder Valley in both the 250 and 450 Class. Both of his inaugural victories came at this track, which he considers to be his home race. Blake Baggett looks to be the first repeat-winner at Thunder Valley in the 250 Class since Ryan Villopoto's second win in 2008. Thunder Valley marked Ryan Dungey's first Lucas Oil Pro Motocross victory aboard a KTM, also marking KTM's first win in the 450 Class. Dungey has won the last three years in the 450 Class.

450 Class Stats: - The first Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship race was held at Thunder Valley on July 24, 2005. Ricky Carmichael won on a Suzuki. - Four different riders have won in eight races at Thunder Valley. Three of the four - Ricky Carmichael, James Stewart and Ryan Dungey - have gone back-to-back. - Ivan Tedesco is the only rider to win in both classes at Thunder Valley. Jake Weimer and Justin Barcia will look to achieve the same feat this weekend. The almost-fully faired F800ST is listed as weighing 461 lb. with its 4.1-gallon fuel tank topped off and that its fuel-injected, counterbalanced engine makes 85 hp and 63 ft.-lb. of torque. Why it’s desirable: Considering that it was produced by a company that had been manufacturing—and boasting the utter superiority of—opposed-Twins for about three-quarters of a century, the parallel-Twin F800ST proved a surprisingly capable and satisfying sport-touring rig. It’s not an ideal choice for most hard-core, long-distance sport-tourers, but it is well-suited for riders who don’t want or need the size, weight and perhaps even the power of the big, liter-plus machines in the category. A 360-degree crankshaft helps the 800’s engine deliver a nice, smooth flow of torque in the lower and middle rpm ranges, and the chassis allows the ST to offer excellent straight-line stability matched with easy, confidence-inspiring corner-carving. The telescopic (not BMW’s usual Telelever) fork was criticized by some riders as being a bit mushy (aftermarket springs and slightly heavier fork oil provide a decent remedy), leading to excessive dive when braking, but the rear suspension is right on the money. In its basic form, the ST came equipped with a fairing but no saddlebags, heated grips or other popular sport-touring amenities. But as is the case with most BMWs, a long list of options allows an ST owner to outfit the bike with a variety of suitable accessories, including detachable hard bags. Just be aware that because many of these bikes were so equipped, the prices for some used F800STs may be higher than what is shown here for the base models. BMW also built a naked version, the F800S, but only in 2007; it didn’t sell nearly as well as the ST and was discontinued after just one season. For 2013, the F800ST has been replaced by the similar but heavily revised F800GT. Useful resources: The F800ST was a lower-volume seller than BMW’s sport-touring Boxers, so you won’t find quite as much readily available information about them on the Internet. But there is one dedicated forum, f800riders.org, and a couple of others—advrider.com and www.bmwmoa.com—that include threads about this middleweight machine. In addition to the usual reviews, accessory sites and bikes-for-sale listings, there is considerable information regarding a rear-wheel bearing failure that afflicted some earlier F800S and ST models. Supposedly, the problem was remedied by BMW in 2008.

Honda, in case you hadn’t noticed, is in the midst of a massive product offensive. Over the last two years, Big Red has introduced 19 new models, many of them non-threatening, easy-to-ride bikes designed to get guys like your friendly neighbor Larry (or his wife Denise) riding while also growing the size of the motorcycle market. It’s a smart plan, and the most recent Hondas spearheading this effort are three midsize parallel-Twins that are mechanically nearly identical to each other but have their own looks and personalities. The faired CBR500R and naked CB500F are already on sale; the ADV-look CB500X hits dealers in June. Shared hardware on these reasonably compact Thailand-built bikes starts with a rigid steel frame that employs Honda’s counterbalanced, 470cc parallel-Twin as a stressed member. This liquid-cooled engine, with an eight-valve head and a 180-degree crank, is a slightly oversquare design, with a 67.0mm bore and a 66.8mm stroke. Fed by twin 34mm throttle bodies, the motor is smooth and borderline too quiet, tuned to emphasize broad torque and high mpg (71!) over peak power. It’s also designed to be low-maintenance. After the bike’s first service at 600 miles, the lightweight 116-pound motor goes 16,000 miles between valve adjustments, and the camshafts don’t need to be removed to make the shim-type adjustments, simplifying the service. Not surprisingly, the six-speed gearbox is shared by all the new Honda CB500s, as are the final-drive gearing and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels fitted with Dunlop Sportmax tires, size 120/70 in front and 160/60 in back. Brakes are the same, too, with a wave-style 320mm brake rotor in front and a 240mm rear. The R and the F also have the same suspension, courtesy of a 41mm Showa fork with 4.3 in. of travel and a Pro-Link shock with nine positions of spring-preload adjustability and 4.7 in. of travel. Shared numbers of significance include a seat height of 30.9 in., a 55.5-in. wheelbase, 25.5 degrees of rake and 4.05 in. of trail. On the mix of streets between Honda’s Torrance, California, headquarters and some fun twisty bits around coastal Palos Verdes, I put approximately 100 miles on a CB500F and a CBR500R, with perhaps 40 of those on the latter bike. While that’s not exactly a full road test, it was enough to generate the following observations:

Honda CB500F This new Honda is a well-turned-out bike, a naked standard, if you will. In other words, it’s the bike Honda set out to make—a non-threatening motorcycle that’s remarkably easy to ride. The F feels narrow and maneuverable, and its low seat means that anybody over, say, 5-foot-8, can place both feet flat on the pavement at stoplights. And once under way, this Honda feels far lighter than its 420-lb. wet weight would suggest, and it has snappy throttle response. With a rider triangle (that formed by the pegs, seat and bars) designed to create a more upright and comfortable riding position than is found on the CBR500R, the CB500F feels like a traditional bike, one that lets the rider see traffic well. And once under way, the broad torque of the parallel-Twin means the rider can live all day below 6000 rpm while still being faster than and able to shoot through most traffic. Above 6000 rpm, however, the engine changes character and rips like a true sportbike all the way to its 8700-rpm redline, by which time the rider is getting slammed by an onrush of air. That same blast is felt on the freeway, where Honda’s 470cc parallel-Twin spins at 5000 rpm to keep the F at a constant 60 mph. The message gleaned on the giant slab? The 2013 Honda CB500F, though capable and boasting excellent straight-line stability, is far better suited for the occasional short hop on the freeway than any lengthy interstate travel. That stated, the F, with its 4.1-gallon gas tank, has an excellent range of around 290 miles. Where the F shines is in everyday around-town practicality and in the medium-speed twisties I encountered on the press ride. The disc brakes slow the bike with authority before it bends into turns with a reassuring composure. While the damping is a bit on the soft side for larger riders, the F responds as directed. And although the low pegs help make taller riders more comfortable on the bike, it’s easy to rub your inside boot on the tarmac when cornering with some verve and not all that much lean.

2013 Honda CBR500R - studio 3/4 front right view

Honda CBR500R Much of what’s already been written about the CB500F and its powertrain and suspension applies to the CBR500R, which clearly is positioned as a junior CBR600RR of sorts. Besides weighing five pounds more than the CB500F thanks to its full bodywork, there’s one major difference: Its fork tubes have been moved up about an inch in the triple-clamps, and narrower café-style bars have been clamped to those sections of tubes that extend above the top triple-clamp. This has multiple effects. It puts more weight on the rider’s hands, it stiffens the fork, it reduces the rider’s frontal area and it helps the CBR500R turn into corners more sharply and willingly. The specs show the R’s bars to be 1.9 in. lower and 1.6 in. narrower than the F’s traditional handlebar, which mounts to a riser on the upper triple-clamp. So, in spite of its slightly heavier weight, the new CBR500R feels a bit sportier than the naked CB500F, aided in part by the improved riding position and sleeker bodywork that better protects the rider. And if people have any lingering doubts about the R’s sporting chops, consider that this bike serves as the spec mount for the European Junior Cup, a Honda-sponsored roadracing series for 14- to 19-year-olds that seeks to identify and groom future MotoGP champs. On the road, the little windscreen above the R’s instrument panel—a compact arrangement highlighted by a bar-type tachometer—deflects a good chunk of the wind coming at the rider. And the upshifts and downshifts, as on the F, are smooth no-think operations. Although the cable clutch is a sign of cost-savings effort on Honda’s part, the lever is easy to modulate and operates with a high-quality, well-oiled feel.

So, which 500 is for you? If you’re looking to move up from a CBR250R, the CBR500R is your bike. It’s a little bit quicker, a little bit faster, a step in the right direction. If you’re a new or experienced rider simply looking for a motorcycle that’s modern, easy to ride and fuel efficient, a bike that’s great choice for around town or short commutes, the F will suit you just fine. In some ways, the choice actually comes down more to who you are, because Honda, with effectively one new bike, has produced models that suit a variety of needs and tastes. Moreover, with these 500s, Honda is bringing new levels of quality and sophistication to the entry-level market. And when you take a look at the abundant Honda Genuine Accessories that are available for these new 500s (which includes lots of carbon-look bits for both models, plus saddlebags and a top case for the F), it’s apparent just how important these bikes are to the company. At $5499, the 2013 Honda CB500F is attractively priced, and you’d be foolish to not get the model with ABS, which adds only $500 to the price. For some strange reason, however, the CB500F with ABS is available only in black. Similarly, the 2013 Honda CBR500R starts at $5999, with an ABS model only $500 more. But that bike is only available in red. Let’s hope Honda expands the available color choices next year. [gallery]

Redesigned for 2014, the R25 is defined by the latest version of Kriega's four-point QUADLOC harness, which balances cargo weight on riders' chests and lower backs, transferring it away from their shoulders. This proprietary system helps effectively relieve the neck strain associated with lesser backpacks. The new R25's unique upper harness system has integrated sliders that give it a wider range of adjustment than the previous version, securing a better fit on men and women of all shapes and sizes, even at the larger and smaller ends of the body-type spectrum. Once it's set up, the pack is claimed to rarely need adjusting. WSBK Press Release: The eni FIM Superbike World Championship gets to the heart of England for Round 5 at Donington Park. The British venue was built in the ‘30s of the last century and saw a new life in the 1970s, becoming one of the most famous tracks for motorcycle racing in the world. Donington Park hosted the first ever World Superbike Round on April 3rd 1988, with pole position scored by local rider Roger Burnett on a Honda. British riders always had a strong connection to their home round, but rarely got on top step of the podium in recent times. In 2012 Jonathan Rea was the first rider from the UK to win a race at Donington Park after four years - before him, James Toseland was the last to score a victory (2007, race 1). Rea won one of the most unpredictable races of all time, settled at the very last turn of the race, after a collision with Leon Haslam and a consequent “domino effect” that involved Marco Melandri, who had previously tried to overtake Haslam, too – team mate at the time - for the race win. Local boy Leon Haslam, now back with the Honda family for 2013, is still recovering from the leg injury he sustained at Assen almost a month ago, and he’s trying his best in order to take part in his home Round. Melandri - Monza 2013: Despite the thrilling finale in 2012, Melandri has fond memories of the last weekend out on the Leicestershire circuit, as the Italian managed to give BMW their maiden World Superbike win in race 1. Works BMW rider Chaz Davies seeks redemption at Donington Park, following two difficult rounds at both Assen and Monza. Aprilia Racing Team duo of Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty, who currently lie 1st and 2nd in Riders standings, have never scored a top-3 on the East-Midlands track. Laverty crashed in 2 out of his 4 WSBK races there, while Guintoli best result is a 5th place in last year’s race 2. Tom Sykes’ best result dates back to 2008, when he raced as a wildcard from BSB and finished with a sensational 2nd place in the aggregate race 1 results, behind Troy Bayliss. Team mate Loris Baz made his debut in WSBK last year at Donington, as substitute for the unfortunate Joan Lascorz. FIXI Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier scored his only WSBK podium finish at the British venue in 2011 (3rd place, race 2), but won race 1 two years before, in his winning British Superbike season. Team Ducati Alstare welcomes Niccolò Canepa for a one-event participation. The current Superstock 1000 rider will join full-time riders Carlos Checa and Ayrton Badovini after testing with fellow Italian last week at Mugello. 2011 WSBK Champion Checa is still recovering from an osseus edema in his left shoulder that ruled him out the Monza round. Lowes - Monza 2013: World Supersport Sam Lowes approaches his home Round as new Championship leader, following his 2nd race win of the season at Monza and a turnaround of events that saw Kenan Sofuoglu’s crash on lap 4 and the withdrawal by Fabien Foret and Michael van der Mark from the final restart - as both were involved in the multiple crash that led to the third red flag in an hectic day for Supersport riders. The English venue is a special place for the 22 year old, who scored his maiden Supersport race win last year on this very track - ahead of Sofuoglu - and has recently moved to Derby, 20km far from the circuit. While Foret was diagnosed with no major injuries after a hospital check-up, Van der Mark sustained multiple fractures in his left foot and he is currently recovering in the UK, together with Superbike team mate Leon Haslam. Both riders are set to tackle the Donington Park Round. Injured David Salom’s place in the Intermoto Ponyexpres Kawasaki Team will be taken once again by Frenchman Florian Marino, who battled for race victory at Monza up to the checkered flag and ended up with an outstanding 2nd place. Scotsman Kev Coghlan will aim for his first podium in the series after showing some good performance in the 5-way battle for rostrum positions in the last round. Irishman Jack Kennedy and Christian Iddon are two riders to watch for the upcoming race, as both rookies know Donington Park like the back of their hand, having competed last year in the British Supersport Championship with strong results - 1st and 2nd place at Donington Park for Kennedy, 3rd for Iddon in race 2. WSBK Donington Park Stats: - Sylvain Guintoli last year was eighth and fifth, while two years ago he was twice eleventh, slowed down by pain in his right hand and left ankle, broken in the opening race in Phillip Island. - Very little luck for Eugene Laverty in Donington: in 2011 he fell on the fourth lap and was fourteenth in race two (setup problems), while last year he had a technical issue which relegated him in fifteenth in race one and fell again in race two. He was fifth in the 2009 Supersport race. - Double podium (two thirds) from pole here last year for Tom Sykes, who scored his maiden podium in this track, back in 2008, race one, second after a “virtual” fight with Troy Bayliss, as the race was interrupted and they were running on cumulative times. - Marco Melandri always hit the spotlight in Donington: winner (maiden win) and second in the 2011 races, Last year won race one (maiden BMW win) and in race two he was running second when he was an innocent victim of the controversial Rea-Haslam clash: Leon was hit by Rea and fell, hitting Marco’s bike, which in turn went into the ground. In the MotoGP championship, Melandri was third in 2006 behind Daniel Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi, while he won the 250 cc. Grand Prix race in 2002. - Chaz Davies was twelfth and seventh in last year’s races. In 2011 he lost for only two tenths of a second the Supersport race, won by Luca Scassa. - Loris Baz debuted in Superbike here last year, replacing Joan Lascorz: he was able to score his maiden points, finishing eighth in race two. - Michel Fabrizio scored points in eight of his ten races here, climbing on the podium in 2009 in race two in third. Last year he was tenth in race one and thirteenth in race two after a ride through for a jump start. - Jonathan Rea was the winner of one of the most controversial races in Superbike history, when last year he climbed on the top step of the podium in race two after hitting Haslam’s BMW at the last corner, eliminating in the process also the other BMW, Melandri’s one. Jonathan counts other four placements in the top-7, but neither of those is a podium finish. His worst result here is a fifteenth in race two, 2009, when he climbed back from 28th after an off-track excursion. - Davide Giugliano last year was seventh in race one and retired for an accident triggered by Checa in race two. He was sixth in the Supersport race in 2007, won by Kenan Sofuoglu. - The best weekend for Leon Camier in Donington came two years ago, when he was eighth in race one and- third in race two. Last year he finished exactly one position lower in both races: ninth in race one and fourth- in race two. He always scored points here: his worst result under the chequered flag was a thirteenth in race- one in 2009, when he nevertheless scored points in his superbike debut. - Last year Jules Cluzel started from pole in the Supersport championship, but in the race he was only third behind Sam Lowes and Kenand Sofuoglu, which fought all the way for the win. Four Superbike races for Max Neukirchner in Donington: in 2007 he was eighth and tenth, while in 2008 he fell in race one in the wet race and suffered setup problems in race two, ending up fourteenth. - Six Superbike races for Ayrton Badovini in Donington: his best result came last year, when he was sixth in race two. - The best weekend for Carlos Checa in Donington was the one of his Championship-winning season, 2011: he scored pole and was third in race one, winning in race two in dominant fashion. These are his only podium placements here. Last year he was sixth in race one and rammed Laverty at the first corner in race two, collecting Smrz and Giugliano in the process. - Two second places, both in grid and in the races for Leon Haslam in Donington: he was second in grid both last year and two years ago, beaten by Sykes and Checa, and was second in race two in 2009 and in race one last year. In last year’s second race, he was leading up to the final corner, when he was hit by Rea and fell, collecting his team-mate Melandri. He pushed his bike past the line, finishing fifteenth. Haslam won both British Superbike races in 2007. - Federico Sandi raced here in 2009, in the Superstock 1000 championship, retiring for a fall when he was running 18th. - The last showing in Donington for Alexander Lundh dates back 2011, when he was tenth in the Supersport race. - Vittorio Iannuzzo never saw the checkered flag in his four Superbike races here: two retirements, a DNS and a disqualification in the 2008 and 2009 weekends. He retired also in last year’s Supersport race, while he enjoyed better luck two years ago, in Supersport, when he was ninth. - In 2011 Mark Aitchison scored here his maiden championship point, when he was fifteenth in race one. Last year he retired in race one and was fourteenth in race two. Two races also in the Supersport championship, in 2008 and 2009: a thirteenth and a retirement. He was fourth in the 2007 Superstock 1000 race won by Niccolò Canepa. Teams: - The current championship leaders, Aprilia, never won in Donington, posting a total of four podium placements, the last one last year with Biaggi, second in race two. - BMW scored in Donington last year the first of his nine Superbike wins with Melandri: Haslam completed the double finishing second. In race two they were in the position of repeating the same result, but they were both knocked off after Rea hit Haslam (race leader at the time) at the last corner. - 17 wins, 48 podium placements and 14 poles for Ducati in Donington: as often happens, it’s easier to look for the instances where the Italian manufacturer missed the podium in both races. In 1989 there were no Ducatis' at the finish: the only Ducati present, Raymond Roche’s one, retired in both races. In 2007 the works team leader, Troy Bayliss, fell in race one (a fall which cost him the amputation of a finger) and missed race two. Lorenzo Lanzi, the other works rider, was fifth in race one and fourth in race two. Last year the best Ducati at the finish was Checa’s in race one, sixth and Guintoli’s in race two, fifth. - Seven wins for Honda in Donington: the last one last year in race two with Jonathan Rea. - Five wins for Kawasaki here, in the 1993-1994 period (five out of six races contested). Last year Tom Sykes was able to take a Kawasaki back on a podium spot in this track for the first time since 1997, with two thirds. - The only Suzuki win here dates back 2001, thanks to Pierfrancesco Chili, in race two: an historical win, as it was the last one for a 750 cc machine in the Championship (GSX-R 750). Motocross Media Press Release: The highly anticipated 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, kicked off last Saturday in sunny California, where the race action lived up to the off-season hype. This Saturday, May 25, the series moves into Lakewood, Colorado's mile high altitude for the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National, Round 2 of the 12-race series, at Thunder Valley MX Park. Ryan Villopoto leads the highly competitive 450 Class into the second round this weekend after sweeping both motos of the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic season opener. After missing the entire 2012 season with injury, the 2011 champion made his return to the AMA Pro Motocross Championship with a dominant victory in his first race back. Defending champion Ryan Dungey began his season with a pair of second place finishes at Hangtown, where the KTM rider was in contention for the lead all afternoon. As the 2012 Thunder Valley National winner, Dungey will head into the weekend with a strong desire to reclaim the top position in the championship point standings. James Stewart came out swinging this season after being absent for over half of last year's championship. Stewart grabbed both hole-shots at Round 1, where a consistent (3-3) score awarded him a podium finish at Hangtown. Stewart battled with Dungey and Villopoto over the course of the two motos, as the trio put on an exciting show that is sure to continue throughout the 2013 season.

Both Dungey and Stewart have had great success at the Thunder Valley National, combining previous wins to claim over half of the total 450 Class wins in the track's history. Dungey currently holds the last three overall wins in Colorado, while Stewart claims the 2007 and 2008 victories. However, some of the most exciting racing action at the season opener took place just beyond the podium positions. Trey Canard and Justin Barcia put in their all at Round 1, where the duo secured the fourth- and fifth-place positions respectively. Other front-runners to keep an eye on include Mike Alessi, Josh Grant, Ryan Sipes, Malcolm Stewart and Dean Wilson.

Ken Roczen, the 2011 MX2 Grand Prix Champion, opened the season in a big way, securing his first career 250 Class victory at the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic. The KTM rider battled with teammate Marvin Musquin, Eli Tomac and defending 250 Class champion Blake Baggett, but Roczen proved to be the dominant force with a (1-1) sweep. Bridgestone Motorsport Press Release: Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa won a wet and wild French Grand Prix ahead of second-placed Cal Crutchlow on the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 M1 and teammate Marc Marquez who was third. The riders were met with extremely challenging conditions at Le Mans for the fourth Grand Prix of the year, with wet asphalt and a track temperature of just 14°C at the beginning of the race, and a rapidly drying track surface which caused variable grip conditions towards the end of the twenty-eight lap contest. Q&A with Shinji Aoki – Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tire Development Department: Cold and wet conditions were forecast for the weekend of the French Grand Prix and this is indeed what happened, can you explain how these conditions affected tire performance at Le Mans? “Yes the conditions were as expected but this didn’t make it any easier for the riders! Track temperatures were very cool, as low as 13°C and although we brought our softest tire compounds to this race, the track didn’t provide the best grip levels, particularly in the morning sessions. The consensus from rider feedback was that tire warm-up performance over the weekend was good, but even so the cool ambient temperatures and strong breeze meant some riders got caught out during practice and qualifying. The cold conditions also meant that very few riders tried the harder rear slick options as they wanted the best rear grip and warm-up performance possible, which is especially important at Le Mans which has a stop-and-go layout with a lot of acceleration zones. “Sunday presented a different kind of challenge for the riders as the only time during the race weekend when track conditions were fully wet was at the beginning of the MotoGP race. Although morning warm up was declared wet, it wasn’t raining, so the level of standing water on track was less than at the beginning of the race. With such limited time to find a wet setup and considering that Le Mans requires good levels of rear grip, every rider ended up choosing the softer wet tires for the race.

No riders selected the harder compound wet tires for the race, but would this option have worked better towards the end of the race when the track was drier? “Some riders actually did try the front and rear hard compound wet tires in morning warm up, and other riders also scrubbed in a set of hard wet weather tires on the sighting lap just before the race. However, because it was so cold which made the grip level of the circuit very low, every rider decided the soft compound wet tire was the best choice, and I think this was the right choice given the conditions. Even though the track began to dry towards the end of the race, the rate of abrasion on the soft wet tire was still within the acceptable range, so I don’t think the harder wet tire would have given a performance advantage at the latter stages of the race. However, if the track temperature was say, five degrees warmer then I believe we would have seen some riders select the harder wet tire for the race and this option may have given riders a performance advantage in some areas, particularly when braking.” Jorge Lorenzo said he had a lack of rear grip during the race; did this have anything to do with his tire? “It was clear during the race that Jorge had an issue as he couldn’t keep the same pace as the leading group. Immediately after the race he had a debrief session with his tire engineer where he explained his lack of rear grip. As is always the case in these situations, his engineer thoroughly examined Jorge’s race tires which were found to be in good working condition. In addition, I examined the tire myself and personally discussed the matter with the Yamaha engineers and we all agreed that Jorge’s lack of rear grip was not attributable to his tire. We received many different comments from the riders after the race on the feeling on the track, even though they all used the same specification of wet tire and endured the same track conditions. In these low grip situations, machine set up is critical as the smallest setting change can have a big effect on performance. Kawasaki Racing Press Release: Tom Sykes and Loris Baz head to Donington Park for Tom’s home round this weekend filled with the expectation of strong results at a venue that should offer good opportunities to both KRT riders. Sykes was impressed by how well his Ninja ZX-10R performed at the ultra high-speed circuit of Monza last time out and at Donington, a track which he believes is even more suited to his machine’s wide ranging performance package, Sykes has every reason to be confident approaching his local event. Baz is no stranger to Donington Park as he passes through the career milestone of one year in the official Kawasaki Racing Team set-up, which he joined at Donington last season. Already on the podium this year, going third at Assen, he is looking to make the most of qualifying and then keep in contention with the leading riders all through Sunday’s races. Both official Kawasaki runners are proven SBK race winners on the awesome Ninja ZX-10R but each is still looking for a first career win in this class at Donington. With the championship now getting tighter in terms of points spread between the leaders Sykes is now only 18 points from the very top, having won a race at Assen and taken five podium finishes from the eight races so far. Loris, still only 20-years-old, sits in sixth place with a season highpoint of third in race two at Assen contributing to his strong early showings. Federico Sandi (Kawasaki Team Pedercini) will be joined at Donington by his regular team-mate Alex Lundh, who missed the recent Monza round after suffering a collarbone injury at the Assen weekend in April. The Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and Superstock 600 European Championship classes will miss out on the Donington race weekend but will reconvene at Portimao on Portugal for the fourth round of these championships on June 9.

Tom Sykes: “I am really looking forward to Donington. Monza for me was one of the hardest circuits we should have gone to, even though we won there last year, but we got on the podium twice. Donington is a flowing, twisting circuit so I am looking forward to riding my Ninja ZX-10R there. There are no real straights so it should be really good. It has always been a favorite of mine and I am very excited to go there with a fast and consistent package on the bike. I have led races at Donington in the past and we have been able to make good laps even at the end of races this year at a variety of different tracks, so I am really looking forward to Donington because it should be a nice one for me and the bike.”

Loris Baz: “I have taken some time out relaxing after Monza and I feel 100% again. I am impatient waiting to get to Donington and it is now one year since I started racing in Superbike with the team. I did not race BSB at Donington when I was doing that championship but I raced there in SBK last year and two times in Superstock before that. It should be a better track than Monza for us and only that final slow part that is not so much fun to ride. The final part is like it was not designed by the same guy that did the main part but it gives us some places where to overtake. We have improved our set-up a lot at Aragon, found some positive things at Monza too, so I am sure we will be really good in all the first section at Donington. Then I'm sure we should also find improvements in the last two corners. Just four rounds into the 18-race 2013 MotoGP World Championship, Ducati factory rider Nicky Hayden is already talking about having surgery at the end of the season to remove a screw from his right wrist. Hayden has complained about pain in that joint for some time. After the Spanish GP in Jerez, the 31-year-old Kentuckian posted a photo on his Twitter feed showing both arms side-by-side. The right arm was visibly misshapen. “A lot of fans were asking, ‘How’s the wrist?’ So, I showed ’em,” said Hayden. “Plus, I wanted to make it clear this wasn’t something I was making up. There’s a chance we’ll have to take the screw out at the end of the year.” Hayden hyperextended his wrist exercising. “It was bothering me in Austin,” he admitted, referring to the second GP of the year, held at Circuit of The Americas. “When I got on the plane to come over to Europe, it really swelled up.” I asked Hayden if the injury had anything to do with his dramatic highside crash during qualifying at last year’s Indianapolis Grand Prix. He sat out that race with a concussion and two fractures in his right hand. “No,” he replied. “If anything, it could be related to Valencia a year and a half ago, that Turn 1 crash when [Alvaro] Bautista took out three of us. That’s when I first had to put a screw in the scaphoid.” Despite the pain, Hayden finished seventh in Spain, beating his teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, by 16 seconds. “Jerez was really tough,” he said, “but I’m glad that I was able to get through the weekend and get a result. I hope I don’t have to suffer like that again any time soon.” After Jerez, Hayden and Dovizioso tested at Mugello in Italy. “The Mugello test wasn’t easy, either,” said Hayden, “but it was worth doing. I think it will pay off when we go back for the race [in early June].” This past weekend at Le Mans, which Hayden calls “maybe my worst track; never had a podium, never had a front row,” the swelling had gone down significantly. Hayden qualified 10th and finished fifth, battling close to the front. Dovizioso qualified third-quickest, led and finished fourth. Post-race, Hayden hardly mentioned his wrist. “I really enjoyed the first 15 laps,” he said. “We know the Ducati is good in the rain, and when the track was wet, I had really good feeling. Unfortunately, when Valentino [Rossi] crashed, I picked it up and went straight to avoid him. I thought I could still recover the gap to Dovi and Cal, and then I ran off again. “Qualifying wasn’t great, but overall, we had pretty good pace this weekend. I’m really looking forward to Mugello—I love the track, I love the race, I love the country. I don’t know if it’s the best GP of the year, but it’s right up there. “We’ll regroup, get the hand even better and really go for it.” [gallery]

In Northern Europe, the best-laid plans of MotoGP teams can always be washed away by rain. Current series champion Jorge Lorenzo said after practice at Le Mans that his main task was “to improve the bike to keep a more consistent pace. I think we’ve got it.” In dry qualifying, however, Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez was first—his second pole in four races—by a bare .030 of a second over Lorenzo. The Yamaha rider had done a long run in practice, assuring himself he had overcome the rapid tire drop that had so quickly killed his speed at the previous round in Jerez, Spain. All bets were off Sunday because it rained. Some hail rain as “the great leveler,” but my view is that rain is a crapshoot. At Le Mans, lap times increased by 10 seconds in the wet. Some see rain as a contest of traction-management electronics. If so, Honda is clearly as strong in this area as Yamaha. Others see rain as a horsepower contest. Years ago, three-time 500cc World Champion Kenny Roberts said, “In the wet, everyone goes equally slow in the corners, so the bike with the most horsepower wins.” If true, that could explain Ducati’s past podiums at Le Mans, which is an accordion-folded dragstrip of short straights and tight corners. Marquez showed a special strength in finishing third behind race-winner Dani Pedrosa and Tech3 Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow. At first Marquez floundered, spinning and sliding on the wet surface. “From the beginning, maybe I tried to push too much,” he said. “I did many, many mistakes and lost many seconds. But in the end, I started to get the feeling again, and I came back.” This was Marquez’s first time on a MotoGP bike at Le Mans and his first MotoGP rain race. Like a new side man, sitting in with a big-name band, he picked up the music as he played.

Second in a MotoGP race is a great result for anyone, especially for a rider on a “second-level” lease bike. Is Crutchlow, who rode injured, desperate to keep his ride, amid rumors that Yamaha wants to replace him with 21-year-old Pol Espargaro, runner-up to Marquez last year in Moto2? We know Yamaha has tried to impose the Lorenzo corner-speed style on all its riders; this is part of the reason American Ben Spies left the team. Why? This season’s races have shown that Lorenzo’s corner-speed style does best in a fairly narrow temperature range—warm enough for grip (track temp on Sunday was 57 degrees), not hot enough to be slippery. So far this year, the Hondas and their riders have proved most versatile in varying conditions (Qatar was the exception). But to give Lorenzo his due, he has turned extreme consistency into a race-winning tool. How much of Honda’s strength is its riders’ styles, and how much is its greater R&D clout? If Yamaha disapproved of Spies’ Superbike style, how much more so must they disapprove of Crutchlow’s? Yet there was hard-braking, hard-riding Crutchlow in second, while lack of grip backed Lorenzo down to finish seventh. Does Yamaha prefer corner speed for reasons of lap time, tire life or fuel economy? We can only speculate, but it may be time for Yamaha to stack its chips on more than that one square. Andrea Dovizioso on the factory Ducati led from third on the grid and had a lively duel with Pedrosa. Progress! Some are seeing rough justice in Rossi’s fall out of fourth, remounting to see the Ducatis he left finish fourth (Dovizioso) and fifth (Nicky Hayden). But these are not the same bikes he rode last year and the year before; they are now evolving in a fresh direction under the new management of Bernhard Gobmeier. It’s great to see a Ducati leading again, because the more Honda succeeds, the more Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta will be tempted to switch MotoGP to a spec engine. [gallery]

Going full bore from start to finish, this spectacular race showcases the best dirt track racers in the world in unparallel non-stop action. The long history of two-wheeled racing at Springfield actually began back in 1937 when the first AMA Class C National Championship was held on the Springfield Mile. In fact, until 1954 if a rider won The Mile he was rewarded the most coveted prize in Dirt Track competition, the National Champion's Number 1 plate. While this is no longer the case, winning the Springfield mile is one of the most coveted victories in the Grand National Championship. Not only does this race pit rider against rider, but it also pits machine against machine. Harley- Davidson, Honda, Aprilia, BMW, Buell, Ducati, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha all offer AMA approved models and seven of these machines are on the entry list. With three races down, there have been three different winners: Mike Rush of Hollister, Calif., took top honors at the season opener in Daytona, the second race at Daytona found Brandon Robinson of Oxford, Pa., first on the podium and at the inaugural Stockton Half-Mile, Sammy Halbert of Graham, Wa., took the checkered. Adding even more for fun and excitement for fans will be a "Race of Legends" hosted by the Ride Academy. The race will include a number of past Grand National Championship riders who will be on hand to show their support for the Basic Twins class scheduled to return to the series. Jay Springsteen, Joe Kopp, Tommy Duma, Charlie Roberts, Jackie Mitchell, Tim Mertens, Ronnie Jones, Steve Beattie, Steve Morehead, Mike Hacker, Chris Carr and more will all be on hand to show their talent on two wheels. Mounted on Honda dirt bikes courtesy of Ride Academy, the former stars of the flat track will race on a short track specifically designed for this event, giving the fans a "bird's eye view" of all the action. The race will be located on the front-stretch of the Springfield Mile and will measure at about a quarter-mile in length. Each participant will be provided number plates and jerseys so that the fans will be able to identify very easily who's who on the track.
